Costa Rica tourism saw a shift in the last five years in visitors coming to Costa Rica, showing a percentage decrease in North Americans and an increase in Central and South Americans coming each year.
According to the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT), in 2005 North American visitors made up for 53% of tourist visits, while in 2010 the number was down to 48%.
However, the the number of visitors from Central and South America has increased to 38% of the 2.1 million visitors in 2010 from the 30% of the 1.7 million visitors in 2005.
The figures indicate that although the percentage of North Americans is down, the actual number of American tourists is up some 110.000, from 895.370 to 1.005.309.
Costa Rica's tourism industry was in March ranted the first on the list of most popular adventure destinations by International Business Times and ranked among the top 10 destinations by newly-weds as a honeymoon destination.
But, despite the good news, bad news is the setback on world tourism competitiveness for 2010 by the World Economic Forum report.
Infrastructure is still a problem, dragging down the country's competitiveness.
Though ranking fifth in the region, Costa Rica dropped one spot overall to position 56 out of 139 countries.
